DANGGISIO

DANGGISIO (당기시오) is a rock/metal band from Daegu in South Korea, pursuing an alternative post-grunge sound. It was created in 2010 by two friends from a middle school:

  • Seok Byeong Gwan (석병관) – the drummer and the leader of the band and
  • Seo Woo Seok (서우석) – the guitarist

In the 2013 the final lineup, that stays the same up to this day, was completed. It includes:

  • Son Jin Wook (손진욱) on vocals
  • Yoon Min Young (윤민영) – second guitar
  • Park Jong Seok (박종석) – bass

The group performed at several local events, yet it officially debuted at the end of 2015 with the single Rope.

After releasing their first, self produced EP Moonlight in 2017, they signed a contract with an indie record label Sugar Records. After 3 years they released their second EP Last Dream that is much more targeted at western audience with several songs in English.

The group’s activities slowed down after Son Jinwook started pursuing his solo career, but they still support their vocalist and performed together few times, for example at both of Jinwook’s fan concerts in 2023.

Son Jinwook – solo career

In 2021 Jinwook participated in Superband 2 (슈퍼밴드2) survival show of JTBC, but unfortunately got eliminated by judges in the second round. It caused a strong backlash from viewers, especially rock music fans. Many say that the decision was unjust, and that the singer wasn’t even given a chance to show his full potential.

At the end of the same year he tried his chances again in an another contest, this time with much better outcome. He took part in Kookmin Singer (내일은 국민가수 / Tommorow’s National Singer) survival show of TV CHOSUN. Even though got handicapped again, as his audition song was edited out from the aired episode, he managed to charm the audience not only with his great vocal abilities but also charismatic and full of energy rock performances. He advanced to the final round and placed 7th, what resulted in signing an additional 2-year contract with n.CH Entertainment, as one of the top 10 performers of the contest. It included releasing a solo single as a part of Kookmin Singer Solo Project Color Film, and becoming a part of a group of National Singers that performed regularly at TV CHOSUN’s music show The Country Calls (국가가 부른다) that aired from February 17 2022 to April 21 2023. Singing a large variety of songs requested by the audience gave him a chance to improve his singing abilities more and widen the number of music genres he’s proficient in.

In the 2022 he attained another success by winning the 186th edition of King of Mask Singer (미스터리 음악쇼 복면가왕) contest and becoming the 61th king of the show. Unfortunately he got dethroned in the next edition.

With the end of 2023 the contract with n.CH Entertainment has ended, but along with the band he’s still contracted to Sugar Records. In 2024 Jinwook’s second solo single came out.

Vocals

The most characteristic trait of Jinwook vocals are very powerful and long mixed high pitches that go even up to A5. He has ability to belt really high as well (up to D5). Yet he sings very confidently in lower notes as well, moving freely in his performances across 3 full octaves.
Aside from wide vocal range, he’s also proficient in using a variety of different singing techniques and styles including for example: vibrato, riffs and runs, vocal fry, rock style distorted singing and shouts, soft head-voice or rapping, what brings a great variety to his performances. Even though singing a number of very different genres at TV CHOSUN shows exposed his abilities to the fullest, he already showed his potential in this field even earlier, while making k-pop covers with DANGGISIO, for example Fake Love of BTS.
